It’s hard to believe but 25 years have passed since Trainspotting was released and despite everything we can say for sure that Danny Boyle’s work remains a cult for an entire generation. A phenomenon that completely rocked the 90s, an era that was living the scourge of heroin as a taboo.
no one before that moment was able to tell and at the same time desecrate a delicate subject like that.
Boyle, in total contrast, was able to mix the right amount of drama with the sarcasm and unscrupulousness that distinguished the overseas junkies, managing to dissect complex issues thanks to the huge interpretation of Ewan Mcgregor & Co. who perfectly embodied the stereotypes of the typical borderline characters of the Scottish suburbs.
It wasn’t just a social phenomenon. It quickly turned into a movement that influenced music and the visual arts. Everything, that until then seemed an environment exclusively for toxic homeless junkies, became a trendy environment. Rave parties, earlobe stretching, bleached hair and electronic music became the antagonists of the Brit-pop culture, which was reigning in Europe.
After 25 years and a sequel, Trainspotting remains a timeless classic, enough to keep influencing and inspiring the imagination of designers around the world.
These are some of the artworks scattered around the web that celebrate Renton, Diane, Sick Boy, Begbie and Spud.
“People think it’s all about misery and desperation and death and all that shite, which is not to be ignored, but what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise we wouldn’t do it. After all, we’re not fucking stupid. At least, we’re not that fucking stupid.”
“Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life… But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin’ else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you’ve got heroin?”
