Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the Broadcast License, including FAQs, usage guidelines, and the full license agreement.
The Broadcast License is for films, TV, streaming, and broadcast productions where the font appears on-screen within audiovisual content. It covers titles, end credits, lower thirds, captions, and other on-screen typography used in a production distributed to an audience.
This license is project-based and applies to one single production title, allowing the production team and collaborators working on that title to use the font for that project.
If the font is used outside the video for marketing materials like posters, ads, packaging, or merchandise, a Commercial / Desktop License is required. Trademark registration of a logo requires a Logo License.
I’m a YouTuber or streamer. Do I need a Broadcast License?
In most cases, no.
If you’re a YouTuber, streamer, or independent content creator publishing videos only on online platforms (such as YouTube, Twitch, or social media), the Commercial / Desktop License is sufficient for using the font in video titles, intros, lower thirds, and overlays.
A Broadcast License is required only for professional broadcast productions, such as TV shows, films, documentaries, or content produced for cinema or major streaming platforms.
I’m creating a logo for a TV series or a film—do I need a Logo License or a Broadcast License?
It depends on how the logo will be used.
Example 1: For a franchise like Stranger Things, the logo appears in the show (Broadcast), and if it’s trademarked you’ll also need the Logo License. Marketing materials outside the video are covered by Commercial.
Example 2: For a film or series where the logo is used only on-screen (and not trademarked), only the Broadcast License is needed.
Can multiple people work on the same production?
Yes. Designers, editors, motion designers, and production teams may all use the font as long as they are working on the same licensed production.
Can I use the font for opening titles, credits, and lower thirds?
Yes. The Broadcast License covers titles, opening sequences, end credits, lower thirds, captions, and other on-screen typography used within the production.
Can I use the font in trailers or teasers?
Yes, if the trailer or teaser is directly related to the licensed production and used as part of its promotion or distribution. Standalone marketing graphics require a Commercial / Desktop License.
Does one Broadcast License cover all marketing materials for the production?
Do I need a separate license for each production or title?
Can I use the font across multiple episodes or a full season?
Yes. A single Broadcast License covers all episodes of the same series or season, as long as they belong to the same production title.
Can I use the font outside this production title (apps, websites, or software products)?
No. The Broadcast License covers font use only within the licensed production title. Any use outside that production—such as apps, websites, games, or software—requires the appropriate license (Webfont, App / Game, or Commercial / Desktop), depending on how the font is used.
If you’re working under a Global Agency License, broadcast and related production use across multiple titles is already included.
